VIRGINARY WITNESS PROGRAM ASSISTANT (TWO-POSITION) Job with the Arlington County, Virginia Government

Position information

The Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Arlington County is seeking two grant-funded entry positions into the Victim Witness Program to provide administrative assistance and information assistance and advice to victims of crime, some of whom speak Spanish and may have difficulty, to victims of the Witness Program to communicate in English.

The Arlington County Commonwealth Prosecutor’s Office is an arbitrary office. Employees are not subject to the same employment protection as other employees in the district.

The special tasks include:

  • Providing direct assistance to victims of crime, including liaising with victims to clarify legal and judicial processes, escorting victims to court, assisting with filing claims with the Virginia Victims Fund, and providing pertinent information about social services and programs;
  • Serve as a liaison with victims, prosecutors, law enforcement agencies, court officials, and related professionals;
  • Providing crisis intervention and referral for supportive advice to minimize the traumatic effects of crime and the criminal justice process;
  • Using the Police Department’s database to obtain and review police reports to help prepare cases for trial;
  • Compilation of case-relevant information;
  • Assisting victims and providing information on their rights and legal process;
  • Representing the victim / witness program at community events and / or providing training on victim services;
  • Case tracking and services provided to victims using the Client Information Management System (CIMS) and the Karpel Prosecutor’s Case Management System (PBK); and
  • Handling of administrative tasks such as preparing court files, writing letters and reports, archiving, faxing, answering phones and ordering program material.

The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, highly organized person with excellent time management and communication skills (oral and written) and the ability to work with a diverse population.

Selection criterion

Minimum: High school diploma or GED plus at least one year of experience providing direct customer information support in a criminal justice or court setting and completing an American Bar Association-recognized paralegal certificate program

Substitution: Additional experience in a paralegal law firm may replace the requirement for the Paralegal Certificate Program.

Desirable: Applicants with the following experience can be given preference:

  • Case and document management;
  • Work in a restorative justice system;
  • Working in a fast-paced professional environment;
  • Use of Prosecutor by Karpel (PBK) or similar case management software;
  • Using Microsoft Office Word and Outlook; and or
  • Bilingualism in English / Spanish.

Special requirements

A background check will be performed on all candidates who are finalists for the position. This may include reviews of the following: criminal records, driver’s license, education, professional license, and credit check, and may require the signing of a release authorizing the county to obtain this information. Working hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This is an entry-level position that currently offers some flexibility in remote working due to the pandemic.

Salary information: Both positions are funded in whole or in part by a grant from the VA Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).

  • Since both positions are entry-level positions, the starting salary is $ 51,000. Annual salary increases occur when the employee achieves his or her career goals.

Full-time employment
All positions are permanent full-time positions, unless otherwise stated in the advertisement. The following advantages are available:

Paid vacation: The vacation entitlement is four hours every two weeks. The vacation entitlement increases every three years until eight hours of vacation every two weeks for twelve or more years of service are earned. The sick leave is earned in the amount of four hours every two weeks. There are eleven paid holidays each year.

Health and Dental Insurance: Three group health insurance plans are offered – a network open access plan, a point-of-service plan, and a health organization. Group dental insurance is also offered. The county pays a significant portion of the premium for these plans for employees and their dependents. A discounted vision plan is provided for eye care.

Life insurance: A group insurance policy for basic life insurance is made available to employees free of charge. The benefit is the one-time annual salary. Additional life insurance policies are available at rates based on the employee’s age and smoking / non-smoking status.

Retirement: The county offers three options for preparing for retirement: a defined benefit plan, a defined contribution plan (401 (a)), and a deferred compensation plan (457). The defined benefit plan provides a monthly retirement pension based on your last average salary and years of service with the county. You pay part of your pre-tax salary into this plan. General employees contribute 4% of the salary; uniformed public security officers contribute 7.5% of the salary. The employees are transferred to the plan after five years of service. The district also participates in this plan.

For general employees, the county also contributes 4.2% of the salary to a defined contribution plan (401 (a)). The county also adjusts your 457 contribution in this plan, up to $ 20 per pay period. The 457 Deferred Compensation Plan allows you to set aside money either before tax (457b) or after tax (457 Roth) until the IRS annual limit. New employees are automatically taken on with an input tax contribution of 2% of their basic salary.

Permanent part-time employment:
Part-time workers who work ten or more hours per week receive paid vacation and benefits in proportion to the number of hours worked per week.

Fixed dates:
The benefits correspond to those of a permanent position, except that the employees do not acquire permanent status.

Fixed regular appointments:
Fixed-term regular employees who work 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health, dental and basic life insurance as described above. You are also entitled to vacation, sick leave and paid vacation.

Temporary seasonal and occasional appointments:
Temporary workers who work on a seasonal or variable basis are on sick leave, but usually do not receive any other paid vacation or benefits. Exceptions will be noted in individual announcements.
