Job Information:

The Staff Planner performs various duties for the Planning & Zoning department including coordinating the application process, preparing reports and presenting at meetings. Applicants should demonstrate attention to detail, communication skills and knowledge of planning and zoning ordinances.

EXAMPLES OF TASKS:

  • Provides developers, engineers, architects, real estate agents, property owners, contractors and others with information on planning and zoning guidelines and regulations, and development services
  • Conducts pre-application meetings with applicants to discuss options and explain submission requirements
  • Facilitates the application review process, ensures required departments are contributing, and sends notifications to surrounding property owners as needed
  • Prepares final, approved documents for record-keeping; keeps project records
  • Conducts on-site inspections in accordance with applicable laws and department policies; completes a thorough documentation
  • Responds to complaints, investigates scheduling and zoning violations, and coordinates with prosecutors to prepare and issue alerts and subpoenas
  • Coordinates with Building Official for site plan reviews
  • Assembles data from maps, reports, investigations, notes, and research to create presentations and reports for meetings
  • Attends and/or presents at meetings of the Planning and Zoning Board and/or Williams County Commission; maintains minutes of meetings for planning and zoning committees
  • Maintains the confidentiality of non-public records and makes available all data and information considered public records under the North Dakota Century Code.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in community planning, architecture, public administration or similar AND 1 year of professional experience in planning with a focus on land use management and/or land use regulation.

OR

  • Associate’s degree in community planning, architecture, public administration or similar AND at least 2 years of professional experience in planning with a concentration in land use management and/or land use regulation.

OR

  • High school diploma (or equivalent) AND 4 or more years of professional experience in planning with a focus on land use management and/or land use regulation.
  • Must pass a background check and drug and alcohol screening before employment.
  • Must have a driver’s license valid in the United States.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Special working conditions:

  • Compulsory participation in occasional evening events
  • In bad weather it may be necessary to conduct site visits

Compensation:

The starting salary for the workforce planner ranges from $27.01 to $29.71 per hour based on education, training and experience.

This position may be understaffed as a Planning and Zoning Technician with a hiring range of $22.75 – $25.03 per hour based on education, training and experience.
