GE Healthcare Names New 3.0T MRI System for Today’s Heroes in Healthcare

CHICAGO, November 28, 2021– (BUSINESS WIRE) – GE Healthcare is proud to present SIGNA HeroI, a new 3.0T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system named in honor of all healthcare workers who continue to care for our global community amid today’s COVID-19 pandemic. SIGNA Hero features new workflows and AIR Recon DL enhancements and is designed to help those on the front lines meet today’s most pressing needsii. With better image quality, improved workflows, increased productivity, improved patient comfort and greater sustainability, SIGNA Hero aims to make demanding examinations easier and “difficult” to “routine”.

“True heroes are made for every challenge, and today’s healthcare workers have proven themselves to be true heroes,” said Jie Xue, President & CEO, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, GE Healthcare. “While the world’s healthcare heroes were at the forefront of caring for patients, our GE Healthcare team continued to work on cutting edge technology to reduce the burden on clinicians and improve patient outcomes. The result is SIGNA Hero – a system that does it all is dedicated to these people who always take care of our global community. “

Health systems – and radiology departments in particular – are burdened more than ever. In the US alone, the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to have resulted in a 35 percent decrease in the volume of MRI procedures in 2020 – from 42 million procedures in 2019 to an estimated 27.4 million in 2020iii. This backlog in non-urgent patient care, coupled with today’s increasing disease burden and industry staff shortage, requires new solutions that help clinicians meet today’s evolving needs.

To address these challenges, GE Healthcare developed SIGNA Hero to support more patients of all shapes and sizes, with a 70cm bore and removable table for greater patient comfort. Additionally, the system unlocks new clinical workflows for today’s healthcare heroes and uses artificial intelligence to improve image clarity while increasing operational efficiency. This includes AIR Recon DL, GE Healthcare’s breakthrough deep learning image reconstruction technology that works across all anatomies and offers clinicians a 30-50 percent reduction in exam timesNS.

“Before going live, we treated an average of 10-12 patients per day. With AIR Recon DL we were able to add an average of four time windows per day,” explains Dr. Randall Stenoien, MD, Owner and CEO of Houston Medical Imaging. “If we get out of COVID and keep increasing the volume, we will have a really great opportunity to be more efficient and improve patient outcomes. It was a wonderful experience. “

To date, AIR Recon DL has helped nearly a million patients around the world, and the feedback from clinical users has been overwhelmingly positive – including the observations of sharper and less noisy images.

Stenoien adds, “We saw a dramatic reduction in scan times. One of our first patients was a pituitary scan; 30 minutes 40 seconds. In January, the scan with the same scanner was 14 minutes and 42 seconds, a 52 percent reduction. And when I sent these images to my neuroradiologist, I got a call right away to ask what on earth had happened. It was the nicest pituitary scan she’d ever seen. “

At the Radiological Society of North America’s 2021 Annual Meeting, GE Healthcare is excited to announce two new additions to this cutting-edge deep learning technology, including 3D Sequences and PROPELLER for robustness of movementii. Both solutions are designed to deliver sharper images with better signals in almost 90 percent of daily clinical scans, regardless of the anatomy being depicted.

In addition, doctors can scan multiple organs at the same time with fewer adjustments to the patient with full body imaging. In combination with GE Healthcare’s patented AIR coils, doctors have complete freedom in positioning and handling the coils during an MRI scan. Each coil is lightweight and flexible to wrap the patient tightly around the patient like a blanket, to conform to each patient’s body shape – and to help them achieve the best possible results.

This feature is particularly useful in today’s disease burden. For example, prostate imaging – a traditionally uncomfortable experience – is now much faster, easier, and more convenient with wing-to-wing clinical solutions such as one-stop prostate imaging with AIR coils and AIR Recon DL, which scan the patient in less than 15 minutes.

In addition, AIR Touch and AIR x use the capabilities of the Edison platform from GE Healthcare to make daily practice smoother. First of all, AIR Touch greatly simplifies scan set-up for technicians and cuts set-up time by up to 37 percent with automatic coil selection and landmarking that automatically optimizes key elements in the coil configuration to get a great image for each patient while using the full power of each coil . Then AIR x offers automated cutting specifications to reduce previously unnecessary manual steps. The AI-based, automated brain and knee scan workflow tool increases consistency and productivity for greater operational efficiency.

GE Healthcare has also developed the system with sustainability in mind. So that healthcare systems can save operating costs in the long term, SIGNA Hero is an environmentally friendly system that can reduce helium consumption by up to 67 percent thanks to intelligent magnet technology from GE Healthcare, which is 1.4 times more efficient than previous generations. In addition, health systems can feel good when they know that the SIGNA Hero Magnet – which is already two tons lighter than its predecessor – is 100 percent climate-neutral designed, produced and delivered. And while they are scanning, the system is designed in such a way that the AIR Recon DL can easily reduce power consumption and scanning time by 30-50 percent.

Finally, GE Healthcare’s integrated, out-of-the-box digital ecosystem provides instant expert support and coaching to seamlessly train employees, manage department logs, and remotely update scanner software at the times that best suit department schedules.
