According to the IMG, 71% of international travelers in the US plan to travel abroad in 2021

– IMG’s Future of Travel survey gathered responses from their US members with previous international travel experience (42% of respondents said they had 3+ international trips per year)

– Survey results show travel insights such as willingness to travel internationally, the importance of safety precautions and motivating factors to travel again

Among several key takeaways and future travel trends, the survey showed increased confidence in travel and reported that 71% plan to travel internationally in 2021.

“As vaccines become more readily available and cities, countries and businesses reopen, people are starting to take their long-awaited recreational trips and plan more trips later this year,” said IMG’s chief commercial officer. Travelers book their first international and domestic trips for 2021

  • Of the 71% of respondents who plan to travel abroad in 2021, 49% plan to start their first trip abroad before September:
    • Spring 2021 – 13%
    • Summer 2021 – 36%
    • Fall 2021 – 32%
    • Winter 2021 – 14%
  • 88% of respondents plan to travel domestically this year
    • 44% plan to do more than 3 domestic trips

The introduction of the COVID-19 vaccine is the main motivational factor to expedite international travel

  • On the one-year anniversary of the global pandemic, 86% of those surveyed said that COVID-19 had affected their willingness to travel
    • 57% said COVID-19 had a huge impact on their willingness to travel
  • According to the respondents, the most important motivational factors that drive travel include:
    • Received the vaccine (69%)
    • Flexible cancellation policy (64%)
    • Low tariffs (57%)
  • The majority of respondents (59%) said they were more likely to travel to destinations in need of a COVID-19 vaccine

As international and domestic travel resume, safety precautions for travelers will come first

  • The survey participants ranked the following precautionary measures according to their importance for their own safety:
    1. Required masks
    2. Required proof of COVID-19 vaccine
    3. Social distancing
    4. Required evidence of a negative COVID-19 test
    5. Capacity limits
    6. Additional cleaning measures
    7. Contactless travel
    8. Temperature tests
    9. Required quarantine time

Travel insurance becomes a hot commodity as travel bookings increase

  • 52% of the respondents said that they are more likely to take out travel protection or travel health insurance for their next trip
